Changes in the Roster of PCA Congregations and Ministers in 2024

Written by Zachary Groff | Thursday, July 31, 2025

When viewed in historical perspective (going back to 2013), it remains the case that more than any other denomination, the EPC is the destination of choice for PCA ministers transferring out of the PCA (90 in the years 2012-2024). The same move is much less common for entire congregations, despite certain high-profile examples, going back to the 1990s.

This year, the Provisional Stated Clerk of the Presbyterian Church in America (PCA), Ruling Elder John Bise, reported on statistical changes which the denomination had realized over the past year, including ministerial and congregational departures from the denomination.

Over the past four years, Presbyterian Polity has brought together, filled out, and published data to ‘track the stats’ regarding losses from the denomination. All along, we have asked, “What can this data tell us about the preferred destination(s) of the ministers and congregations that leave the PCA for other ecclesiastical settings?”

The various lists of congregations added, transferred, or dissolved in 2024 is found on pages 322-23 of the Commissioner Handbook to the 52nd General Assembly. Similar lists of ministers added to the PCA, dismissed to other denominations, deceased, or otherwise removed from office in 2024 are found on pages 323-30. Once the Minutes of the 52nd General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church in America are finalized and published, this post will be updated to direct readers to the appropriate page numbers in that document.

After comparing the statistical reports on pages 322-30 with other information I could find online and through friends, here are my summary findings for the changes in the roster of PCA congregations and ministers in 2024:

Congregations Organized in 2024: 14
Existing Congregations Added in 2024: 6 (2 EPC; 1 ARP; 1 PC(USA); 1 CRC; 1 Independent)
Gross Total of Congregations Added in 2024: 20

Congregations Dissolved in 2024: 8
Congregations Dismissed to Other Denominations in 2024: 7 (1 ARP; 2 Independency; 2 CREC; 1 EPC; 1 Vanguard)
Congregations Merged in 2024: 1 (into an existing church)
Gross Total of Congregations Lost in 2024: 16

Ministers Ordained in 2024: 145
Ministers Received from Other Denominations in 2024: 34 (2 ARP; 1 BPC; 3 CRC; 1 ECA; 1 ECO; 6 EPC; 5 Independent; 3 KAPC; 5 OPC; 1 RCA; 2 SBC; 1 URC)
Ministers Added (Other) in 2024: 7
Gross Total of Ministers Added in 2024: 186
