Remember, in your struggle, that Christ has overcome the world—including its temporary pleasures. Jesus is infinitely more satisfying than the world.
In the world, not of the world. That is the aim of the Christian; that is the goal of every follower of Jesus Christ. We embark on our journeys through life, navigating the world at every turn. This is not our home. We are simply sojourners, exiles; we are merely passing through.
The Puritan Thomas Brooks once wrote, “The world and you must part, or Christ and you will never meet.” Christ will not invade our hearts by his Spirit if we do not forsake this temporary world. We’re enticed daily with pleasures that the world offers—we must reject them. We must see them for what they are: putrid, rank, holding out false hope.
We indeed must part with this world by rejecting its enticements, temptations, and allurements. We cannot love the world along with God. Truly, it’s impossible. There’s no room for the Lord in a heart that is in love with the world—and vice versa. When God transforms our hearts, we no longer look to the world for satisfaction (although it doesn’t mean we won’t struggle with that).
