The Sin That So Easily Trips Us Up

God help you and me to practically and purposefully, by the grace of God, eliminate the sin that trips us up.

Written by Pete Hurst | Saturday, October 4, 2025

Are you lazy? Are you cynical? Are you an enabler of your children or spouse to disobey because you don’t lovingly confront them with their sin? We must not believe the lie that our sin hurts no one.

Hebrews 12: 1-3 reminds us that we are to keep our eyes on Jesus Christ as we live this life.

It says we are to “lay aside the sin that so easily entangles us” (NASV); or the “sin which clings so closely” (ESV) to us; or the “sin which doth so easily beset us” (KJV); or “the sin that so easily ensnares us” (NKJV). (These are different translations of the same phrase).

Sin is any violation of God’s law or commandments. Jesus said, if we love Him we will keep His commandments (John 14:15).

None of us do this as we should, which is why we need Christ’s forgiveness for our sins and His righteousness to clothe us.

Christ forgives us as we confess our sins (Matthew 6:12), but that doesn’t mean we have permission to disobey. Instead, He calls us to oppose all that is sinful in our lives (Ex. Matthew 5:21-30).
