Everything in this life can feel like it is falling apart, but when there is unity at home and with your spiritual family, you feel like you can endure. Why?
Behold, how good and how pleasant it is
For brothers to dwell in unity!
It is like the precious oil upon the head,
Coming down upon the beard,
Even Aaron’s beard,
Coming down the edge of his robes.
It is like the dew of Hermon
Coming down upon the mountains of Zion;
For there the Lord commanded the blessing- life forever.
Psalm 133
One of my favorite passages is in Philippians 2:1-11. Paul urged and commanded the church to be of one mind and one heart. He longed for the church to be as unified as God the Father and God the Son, who are equal as God. Yet, the Son in love submits to the Father and is completely unified in doing all that the Father commands.
The church is called to do the same. We are all equal at the cross. We are all sinners who are undeserving of grace. We all need Jesus’ life and death to be credited to us to be made right with God. No one starts the Christian life ahead of another based on their life before Christ. We can see this in the life of Paul, who was a Hebrew of Hebrews and zealous about the law. Yet, he identified himself as the chief of sinners.
Our life before Christ and after Christ can cause us to puff ourselves up and cause us to think of ourselves as more important than we are. We all tend to make more of ourselves than we should. For some, it manifests as prideful boasting; for others, it manifests as self-deprecation. However, pride touches us all. Pride kills unity. Humility unites the brothers and sisters in the church. Seeing yourself rightly allows you to see your brothers and sisters rightly. Love for God unites the body. When we love God truly, we will love those whom He saved.
