Newest Evangelical Presbyterian Church Organized

Written by Don K. Clements | Saturday, February 27, 2010

Discovery Church of Evansville, Indiana planted in September 2008 reached particular church status by the action of the Midwest Preesbytery on February 12, 2010. Pastor Trey McClain told the story of Discovery this way:

“My wife Kitten and I began to feel God leading us to plant a church on the west side of Evansville in January 2007 while serving on the staff of Olivet EPC. We asked Olivet’s session to help us discern that call. They affirmed God’s working in our lives and we announced our resignation for May 2008. God began to form a launch team that worked with us during the planning/development season of Discovery Church.

We held monthly worship services throughout the summer months and then launched weekly services on September 7, 2008 in Kerasotes Stadium 16 (a local movie theater).

From the very beginning our desire was to be a church for those who did not like church.

God provided me with an incredible bi-vocational opportunity which allowed me to support our family and build relationships with others in the community. During our summer preview services, I invited a few co-workers to attend. One answered, “I’m not sure. I don’t really like church.”

My reply came quickly, “Great. We created Discovery with you in mind.” He ended up in our service on Sunday morning and a month later asked me what it meant to be saved. Over the next few weeks, we discussed what this meant and soon he was ready to surrender his life to Christ.

Over the course of the last year and a half, we have watched our statistical numbers do gymnastics. We launched with 85 in our first worship service. Through skillful leadership and great teaching, we grew that number to 40 by December. God graciously blessed us and we have seen the number climb back to close to 90 for most Sundays. Over the last four weeks, we have averaged 13 kids 6 years of age and under in our nursery.

God has blessed us greatly. We are extremely thankful for the support of the Midwest Presbytery, the Church Planting & Development team of the Presbytery, and churches like Olivet which have supported and encouraged us. We are excited to be a part of the blessing in helping plant four churches in the coming year throughout the world.”
