I Wrestled A Skunk Once

Don’t wrestle a skunk, and don’t mess with sin.

Written by Jacob Crouch | Saturday, January 3, 2026

Have you encountered an opportunity to sin, and instead of doing the common sense thing of walking away, you chose instead to stick around? Maybe, like me, you chose to dive head first into the experience. Odds are, if you did that, you ended up with consequences that were not enjoyable or easy to hide.

Unfortunately, the title of this article is not a metaphor. I actually wrestled a skunk once. (Tell me you’re from Mississippi without telling me you’re from Mississippi). It was shameful really. I was in middle school and spending the night at a friend’s house. We decided to camp out in the woods that night, and as we were talking, a skunk walked up. Whoever had the idea, I can’t remember, we decided to attack this poor skunk. After probably an hour, we finally got the better of him. But it came at great personal cost. If you’ve never wrestled a skunk before (I wouldn’t suggest it), there are certain side effects that are really hard to hide. No one has to guess if you’ve wrestled a skunk. My momma picked me up the next morning (a Sunday no less), and she was not happy. I had to bathe in my front yard in a tub of tomato juice while my mom covered my hair in peanut butter. And let me be clear; I still smelled like a skunk. And I still had to go to church. Why am I telling you this story?
