D. G. Hart and Parker Williamson headline conference on Christianity and Liberalism

Written by | Thursday, April 15, 2010

The Christianity and Liberalism Conference, sponsored by Covenant Presbyterian Church (EPC) in Omaha, Nebraska will be held April 21-22.

“Guests can expect inspiring worship, outstanding teaching from our two featured speakers, fellowship and conversation with the speakers during supper and lunch breaks, and question and answers regarding how best to combat theological liberalism in the life of Christ Church here in America,” Covenant Pastor Kevin McDonald said.

Headlining the event is Dr. D.G. Hart, a leading historian and speaker on the Protestant church. Also speaking will be the Rev. Parker T. Williamson, editor emeritus of The Layman.

Hart’s presentations during the conference include “Defending the Faith: J. Gresham Machen and The Crisis of American Protestantism” (part 1 and 2), “The Crisis of Conservative Protestantism in Modern America” and “The Lost Soul of American Protestantism.”

Williamson will speak on “Christianity and Liberalism: The Church in an Age of Upheaval” and “Standing Firm: Reclaiming Christian Faith in Times of Controversy.”

They will give a joint presentation “The Blessed Hope” and participate in a panel discussion on April 22. Both days will include dialogue groups during meal times.
Hart, who received a PhD from Johns Hopkins University, has served as a professor of church history and academic dean at Westminster Seminary, Calif.; and as professor of church history at Westminster Theological Seminary, Philadelphia, Pa. He has directed the Institute for the Study of American Evangelicals at Wheaton College, Wheaton, Ill., serves on the Board of Great Commission Publications, and has authored many books and articles including: The Lost Soul of American Protestantism; and Defending the Faith: J Gresham Machen and The Crisis of Conservative Protestantism in Modern America.

Parker Williamson (Union Seminary, M.Div.; Yale Divinity School M.A.), is the author of four books including Standing Firm: Reclaiming Christian Faith in Times of Controversy. Williamson is a conservative and evangelical church leader with a pastor’s heart. As an evangelical reformed leader in the renewal movement within the Presbyterian Church (USA) many Presbyterians have sought out and rallied behind Williamson’s leadership in standing firm in the face of theological aberrances. He continually provides a vision and voice for church leaders confronting liberalism: from the Sophia movement (goddess worship); to the multitude of liberation theology movements that have used church funding for radical groups that preach and practice violence; and the New Age movements within the denomination; to the misuse of money intended to proclaim the Gospel of Jesus Christ.

Cost of the conference is $30 per person. All participants will receive a complimentary copy of Williamson’s Standing Firm.

For more information or to register for the conference, call (402) 498-9000 or visit Covenant’s Web site at www.cpcomaha.org.
