Christianity Today Publishes Article Defending Theistic Evolution

Where Did We Come From? by Andrew J. Wilson, an English pastor and author, presents a disarming article in favor of theistic evolution

But he is not alone in these dubious observations. He brings out big names to validate his version of theistic evolution: “John Stott, Derek Kidner, J. I. Packer, Tim Keller, and Francis Collins have all more or less taken the same approach.” He could add PCA minister, Dr. Choong, to the list as well.

The latest edition of Christianity Today published a curious article entitled, Where Did We Come From? The author, Andrew J. Wilson, an English pastor and author, presents a disarming article in favor of theistic evolution.

While insisting that the Bible makes no mistakes (when “interpreted properly”) he states that “the argument from design, the historicity of the Fall, and the theory of evolution fit together.”

Design and descent can coexist because, “Even if Darwin’s theory was proved right in every detail, it wouldn’t make evolution random, and it certainly wouldn’t rule out design.”

Wanting to wed the historicity of Adam and Eve with current evolutionary science, he offers some observations that may pave the way for a more congenial theistic evolution. He first observes:

“There is no evidence to say that a pair of Neolithic farmers, formed directly by the hand of God in Mesopotamia, did not exist. There’s no evidence to suggest that they weren’t the first people, made in his image, with the soul-life of God breathed into them. There’s no evidence to contradict the claim that they knew God, and were tempted, and sinned, and were exiled, and had children, and died.”

He continues:

“Not only that, but Genesis doesn’t actually say that all human beings are biologically descended from Adam and Eve alone.”

He finishes with more telling observations:

“The people Cain was scared of, and the woman he married, don’t seem to be related to him. And if they weren’t, then we don’t actually know if they were created out of the dust of the earth, created out of creatures that already existed, or created in some other way. So, I don’t think Milton and Darwin are impossible to reconcile.”

But he is not alone in these dubious observations. He brings out big names to validate his version of theistic evolution:

“John Stott, Derek Kidner, J. I. Packer, Tim Keller, and Francis Collins have all more or less taken the same approach.”

He could add PCA minister, Dr. Choong, to the list as well.

Mr. Wilson’s article is not aggressive in its promotion of theistic evolution. Even so, it is disturbing to find Christianity Today publishing such an article. Hopefully, they will publish a rebuttal.
