Reality: Accepting That Believers Have Different Political Views
While we must not judge the spiritual state of fellow believers by their political views, we do need to assess the consequences of their choices.
Mr. Kersten’s statement that, “The Lord God Almighty does not require a Republican appointee to accomplish His will,” makes me wonder if he would sign on to a similar view about the efforts of William Wilberforce to end slavery, or Abraham Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation, or the Revolutionary War? Life, Liberty and Temptation was such... Continue Reading
Protests and/or Civil Discourse
Much pragmatism addresses a matter shortsightedly, without consideration of long-term considerations, and later must adjust to the reality that its short-term benefits were not worthy of its long-term costs.
When pragmatists discuss the relationship of protests (and the riots and lootings that frequently attend them), they ordinarily defend protesting on the grounds that it leads to change. Whether this defense is true or not is a matter for considerable discussion, but what I wish to question is whether it is appropriate for public discourse... Continue Reading
Cool Christianity Is (Still) A Bad Idea
Sensing new urgency to make the gospel more appealing to the next generation—which polls showed were leaving faith in greater numbers—pastors and Christian influencers tried to rebrand faith.
Overemphasis on cultural acceptability—in whatever culture you’re in—inevitably leads to theological compromise. This is where evangelicalism’s pragmatism-driven image obsession has been its undoing. Seeker-friendliness almost always means softening difficult doctrines or ignoring them altogether. Preaching for applause, clicks, and street cred with a particular tribe almost always leads to theological distortion. At the beginning... Continue Reading
Systemic Racism?
I take it that the expression “systemic racism” is intentional, and that the expression means something different from “occasional racist behavior,” or even “widespread racism.”
This brief essay is not intended to pick an argument over terms alone; I believe referring to “systemic” racism where it does not exist is not only untrue, it is dangerous. It permits some people to feel free to destroy anything—public or private—since, after all, such things are “part of the system,” and “the system”... Continue Reading
Undiminished Sin: Missouri Presbytery’s Fading Doctrine of Sanctification (Part 1)
A review of Missouri Presbytery’s response to Allegation #3 raised by Grace and Peace PCA, Anna, TX.
The expectation of God sanctifying sinning saints in this life has declined in a Reformed presbytery, yet Presbyterians believe in lusts weakened or, we used to (Westminster Confession XIII:1). The alien theology in and around St. Louis undermines real sanctification. They fix on the potency of sin, and pathetically they think it is possible that... Continue Reading
Some Black Lives Matter; Others (Apparently) Don’t
The group that calls itself Black Lives Matter is not as innocent (in the literal sense) as first might appear.
People of good will heartily endorse the sentence, “Black lives matter,” because all human lives matter, and because we are especially sympathetic with the Black experience in America. One can heartily endorse that sentence, however, without endorsing the organization that goes by that name or the Marxist social theory that it promotes. Part 2... Continue Reading
Beyond Reasonable Doubt?
As a nation we have had about a century of discussing the sometimes-imperfect relationship between actual events and reported events.
We have likely torn several cities apart because a lifelong drug addict swallowed a drug after he was already high on another drug (methamphetamine), in order to prevent officers from discovering him with it and charging him with a narcotics violation that would violate his parole terms and return him to prison. Mr. Floyd likely... Continue Reading
Charting the Decline of Universities: LGBTQ+ Sexual Ethics Fail Logic and Reason
Secular sanctimony hails from Indiana Wesleyan University (IWU) in America's heartland
Is American evangelicalism actually at the point of telling all who identify as LAGS+ that Christ’s desire for them is their comfort rather than their confession? Are we seriously going to tell everyone who defines themselves by their greed and avarice that the church’s priority is their safety rather than their salvation? Are we now to conclude... Give the Devil Enough Rope
The only way of defeating the power of darkness is to rely on the Power beyond darkness.
The end of the world is nigh. It is this ultimate reality which should animate and motivate us. The devil might be able to hang us before he hangs himself, but he can’t deprive us of the resurrection which will separate us from his clutches forever. Give the devil enough rope and he’ll hang... Tim Keller, John Piper, & Donald Trump
If America is to be overrun by the barbarian hordes, it is kindly requested that Tim Keller & Co. not open the gates.
Tim Keller and John Piper have had long, fruitful ministries. No doubt both are under a great deal of pressure to declare decisively on this election. Moreover, Keller is battling pancreatic cancer and deserves our prayers and well wishes. That said, I believe both are egregiously wrong in this instance. Matthew 24:24 tells us the...
