Reality: Accepting That Believers Have Different Political Views

While we must not judge the spiritual state of fellow believers by their political views, we do need to assess the consequences of their choices.

Written by George Douglas | Saturday, November 14, 2020

Mr. Kersten’s statement that, “The Lord God Almighty does not require a Republican appointee to accomplish His will,” makes me wonder if he would sign on to a similar view about the efforts of William Wilberforce to end slavery, or Abraham Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation, or the Revolutionary War?

Life, Liberty and Temptation was such a timely article by Michael Kersten.  Just this weekend my daughter and I had a conversation flowing from her question, “Daddy, how can any true Christian support Biden?”  My response was that we must not judge the spiritual state of fellow believers by their political views, because it may be that they are completely sincere yet misguided and/or simply haven’t thought the consequences of their choices all the way through.  Mr. Kersten’s piece was a perfect example of this, and these thoughts came to mind in reading it.

Mr. Kersten is obviously a Social Justice Warrior.  He says “Since abortion is an issue of life and death, many evangelicals determine that Trump’s immorality and other vices do not outweigh the benefit of having a pro-life president, no matter how recently he joined the cause.”  Really?  Has Mr. Kersten not done precisely the opposite, i.e., determined that the Biden/Democrat/SJW platforms outweigh the immorality of:

  1. abortion on demand;
  2. sacrificing the jobs and welfare of tens of millions of Americans (many of whom are true followers of Jesus) for the SJW ideals of open borders, free everything, and sanctuary for illegal (“undocumented”) criminals;
  3. rejection of what Mr. Kersten calls “conservative moral values” – you know, outdated ideas like no gay marriage, no transgender identification, no teaching BLM/Marxism ideas in publicly funded schools, protection of private property – and he asks “Where does God call us to pursue any of these things?” [Answer: in Scripture];
  4.  what Mr. Kersten calls “violent force against citizens peacefully protesting police brutality” [of course they were – those rocks, bottles, and other assaults were all made up]; and
  5. “divisiveness, fear, anger, lying and slander” [who is he kidding? these are leftist/Democrat trademarks].

Mr. Kersten has apparently bought into the Democrat claim that Trump should be responsible for 200,000 Covid deaths.  Leaving aside the fact that this number is vastly overstated, the question to him is “Where were the SJWs on a Covid response?  Did anyone have a better plan?  How do you balance the potential for sickness and death from Covid against the certainty of economic ruin for tens of millions of ordinary Americans?  What value do you place on their lives?”

Mr. Kersten’s view sounds like the SJW version of what William Carey was told by is church when he wanted to become a missionary to India, i.e., that “if God intends the salvation of the heathen, he will do it without consulting you or me.”  God works through human means, and the irony (hypocrisy?) of Mr. Kersten’s argument is that he fails to acknowledge that the SJWs seek to do exactly what they accuse conservative believers of doing, i.e., imposing their agenda on the rest of us through political means.

Last but not least, when can your readers look forward to a sequel from Mr. Kersten detailing the many moral failures of Joe Biden (not to mention Kamala Harris) and why true believers cannot vote for him?  Will it be in time to matter?

We are supposed to respond to other peoples’ errors with gentleness and respect.  I’m not sure if this response meets that test but I don’t know how to soften it without making it fuzzy.  My hope is that Mr. Kersten will reconsider his arguments even though his apology will come too late to matter.
