State Fire Marshal Determines Fire Of The Atmore PCA Church Building Was Caused By Lightning
Investigators have confirmed that a Saturday night fire that destroyed an Atmore Church was caused by lightning.
The fire was reported during a heavy thunderstorm just before 11 p.m. Saturday. Just hours after the fire started, Atmore Fire Chief Ronald Peebles said it appeared the fire was likely caused by lighting. Investigators from the Alabama Department Fire Marshal’s Office returned to the Horner Street Scene Sunday morning, and by Monday, they confirmed... Continue Reading
Fatal Attraction: Lot’s Wife and Side B Christianity
Side B Christianity requires no death. Instead, it clings to the old sinful nature and identity.
Between salvation and Sodom there is no middle ground, no safe place to dwell. The Bible tells us to flee from temptation, not flirt with it. To find my identity in Sodom is a fatal attraction and it leads not to life but to judgement. God offers us a way of salvation and we dare... Continue Reading
Don’t Preach a Commentary
Effective Bible preaching shapes hearts and minds every time God’s people gather.
The value of the biblical languages is found in understanding the whole package that the original languages bring (lexical, syntactical, discourse analysis, etc.)–something that a congregation does not need to hear unpacked from the pulpit, but can help a pastor preach the text more faithfully. Line by line, word by word, the preacher amazed... Continue Reading

Here I Am . . . Well, Sort Of
If we allow our culture to tell us that we can have our lives exactly how we want them, will we be less or more inclined to drop our nets and immediately follow Christ wherever he calls?
Can you imagine the Lord saying to the prophet, “Whom shall I send?” and the prophet responding, “Here I am . . . well, that is, if you keep in mind that I only want to serve in the Southern kingdom of Israel, and only if you call me to preach the good news.” ... Continue Reading

Let Me Get Home Before Dark: Wisdom to Help Pastors Finish Well
Every pastor will preach a last sermon.
If you assume most pastors finish poorly, you’d be wrong. As I look back on all my pastors and professors these last six decades, I see faithful men you’ve never heard of who got home before dark and left a quiet legacy of faithful service. It’s not right for their success to be overshadowed by... Continue Reading
As Dissenters Exit, Christian Reformed Church Resists Same-Sex Affirmation
The Christian Reformed Church in North America (CRC) is drawing firm boundaries, prompting theological revisionists to begin to depart the denomination.
[The CRC] Synod voted 134 to 50 to instruct churches that have publicly contradicted synod decisions “on unchastity to repent and to honor their covenant commitments to the CRCNA.” The same resolution said, “all office-bearers from churches in non-compliance, by actions or in any form of media, be placed on a limited suspension” where officebearers... Psalm 142 and the Provision of the Church for Christ’s People
He is in the psalms and so is His church.
Some of God’s people in every age are ready to give up on the church, believing that there are no “good” ones near them or maybe even despairing that there are no “good” ones anywhere. But this is not true. David prayed in faith, knowing that his greatest needs. Among other things, Psalm 142... Continue Reading
Qualifications and Duties of an Elder
Live a life of practical righteousness, trying to reflect God’s view in every decision he makes.
In the Bible, the distinction is made between a shepherd and a hired hand (John 10:11-15). A shepherd (elder) has in his heart a God-given love for the sheep and a desire to care for those entrusted to him. The hired hand is unwilling to become as emotionally involved. The following is a list... Continue Reading
