World Journalism Institute Announces 2010 Belz International Fellowships

Written by Staff | Tuesday, February 16, 2010

The Belz Fellowships are named for Joel Belz, pioneering journalist, editor and publisher who continues to have a worldwide vision for influencing human culture through competent and truthful communication.

World Journalism Institute has announced that it has received funding for the 2010 Belz International Media Fellowships. The fellowships will enable ten Christian journalists from Africa or Latin America to attend the 2010 convention of the National Association of Hispanic Journalists (Denver, June 23-26) or the National Association of Black Journalists (San Diego, July 28-August 1), reports World Journalism Institute.

The fellowship stipend of $2,500 is for travel, housing and convention costs and will be awarded on a competitive basis. Journalists wishing to apply must apply online.

The Belz Fellowships are named for Joel Belz, pioneering journalist, editor and publisher who continues to have a worldwide vision for influencing human culture through competent and truthful communication.

WJI Director Robert Case said, “Joel Belz comes from a distinguished family of churchmen who were communicators. He, himself, is a pioneer in news gathering with Christian sensibilities. The institute is honored to be associated with the Belz name.”

The recipients of the 2009 Belz Fellowships were Shirley Asiedu-Addo (Ghana), Kunle Awosiyan (Nigeria), Gerald Bareebe (Uganda), Chi Ernest Cho (Cameroon), Florence Mutesi (Rwanda), Sunday Oguntola (Nigeria) and Tom Osanjo (Kenya).

The World Journalism Institute exists to recruit, equip, place and encourage Christians in the mainstream newsrooms of America first and then the world. WJI’s minority conferences have featured such nationally known journalists as Manny Garcia, John Fountain, David Ortiz, Dion and Karima Haynes, Herbert and Mira Lowe, Clayton Sizemore, Michael Luo, Rafael Olmeda, Joe Torres and Adrienne Gaines.
