Update: Overture Consideration Deferred on ‘Women May be Deacons‘ in Proposed BCO Amendment

Written by Staff | Monday, January 25, 2010

Update: The Metro Atlanta Presbytery met on January 23, 2010 and voted to defer consideration on the proposed overture from Westminster PCA in Atlanta in order to hear a report from a study committee on the meaning of ordination. The overture may be taken up for consideration at the May stated meeting after considering the report of the study committee.

The Bayly blog is reporting that Metro Atlanta Presbytery will be considering a proposed amendment to the Presbyterian Church in America’s Book of Church Order at its January 23 stated meeting. The proposed amendment, adopted by the Session of Atlanta’s Westminster Presbyterian Church, asks the PCA General Assembly to allow local churches to select men and women as deacons in a manner determined by the Session, and then commissioning them.

The final section of the overture states: “NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that Metro Atlanta Presbytery hereby overtures the 38th General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church in America to amend Book of Church Order 9-7 to include the following sentence to be placed at the end of the section

“These assistants to the deacons, selected by means determined by each Session, may be commissioned, but not ordained.”
