Why Obeying God Matters

Obedience comes from faith, and through it, we reflect His love and build a legacy that honors Him.

Written by Aaron Joseph Hall | Tuesday, February 25, 2025

It’s hard to obey what we don’t know. That’s why immersing ourselves in the Bible is so important. The more we understand God’s Word, the more we can align our lives with His will. Studying Scripture isn’t just about gaining knowledge—it’s about transformation. Psalm 119:105 says, “Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.” If we want to follow God’s commands, we have to know where He’s leading us.

Obeying God isn’t just about following rules or doing what we’re told. It’s about building a life grounded in faith, trust, and a meaningful relationship with Him. Whether it’s in our personal lives, spiritual journeys, or the way we impact others, obedience to God shapes who we are. It’s a reflection of our belief in His plan and a way to live with purpose, peace, and eternal promise.

The Spiritual Importance of Obeying God

Understanding God’s Commands

The Bible isn’t a random set of rules meant to restrict our lives. God’s commands are like signposts along a road, guiding us toward righteousness and away from harm. They’re deeply rooted in love and care. For example, the Ten Commandments aren’t just rules—they’re principles that protect us from chaos and help us live in harmony with others. When Jesus summarized these commands into loving God and loving others (Matthew 22:37-39), it became clear that obedience isn’t about legalism but about aligning our lives with His love.

Cultivating a Closer Relationship with God

When we choose to obey God, we draw closer to Him. Think of it like a relationship with a trusted friend or parent—when we listen to their advice or follow their guidance, we deepen the bond. The same is true with God. Obedience fosters trust, intimacy, and clarity. When we say “yes” to His will, we begin to see how His plan fits together, even when it doesn’t make sense at first. It’s through obedience that we recognize His voice more clearly and experience His presence more deeply.

The Role of Faith in Obedience

Faith and obedience go hand in hand. Obedience flows from faith—an acknowledgment that God knows best, even when we can’t see the outcome. Hebrews 11 is full of examples of people like Abraham and Noah, who obeyed because they trusted God’s promises. Faith gives us the confidence to act on God’s Word, knowing that He’s faithful to keep His end of the promise. Without faith, obedience becomes empty; with it, obedience becomes an act of worship.

The Benefits of Obeying God in Daily Life

Finding Peace and Purpose

One of the most beautiful outcomes of obeying God is the peace it brings. There’s a stillness that comes from knowing you’re walking in His will. It reminds me of Philippians 4:7, which talks about the peace that surpasses all understanding. Living obediently aligns us with our God-given purpose, which removes the confusion and restlessness that often come with chasing our own desires.

Making Wiser Choices

Let’s face it: life is full of decisions, some small and some life-changing. When we obey God, we tap into His wisdom.
