Why Do You Believe That?

If you’re walking apart from God’s word, then you are no longer walking by faith.

Written by Jacob Crouch | Saturday, August 30, 2025

Where are we getting our information if not from the Bible? From ourselves? I’ll be honest, I changed my clothes twice today. I put something on, thought it looked good, and later realized it looked really stupid. If I can’t even make good decisions about shirts and pants, then surely I’m not the guy to discern the eternal mysteries of the Godhead, or to unpack the wisdom of morality and humanity.

Why do you believe what you believe? And I’m talking specifically to those who claim Christ. Why do you believe what you believe about Jesus? Why do you believe what you believe about sin, or obedience, or children, or marriage, or money, or etc…? There is only one right answer here. We believe what we believe because God has revealed these things to us in the Bible. How do I know anything I know apart from His word? I would never have known about Jesus if it hadn’t been for His word. I would never have a godly opinion about money if He hadn’t told me how to use it in the Bible. Christians believe because God has spoken.

Dangerous Territory

To believe without God’s word on a matter is dangerous territory. I recently heard someone talking about being convinced of a certain doctrine. It was speculative and the verse that they were using was being misapplied. The person they were speaking with convinced them that the verse didn’t endorse that view, and their response was, “Well. I still believe this.” What!? No! If you don’t have a biblical leg to stand on, then you have no leg to stand on. If your opinions and convictions don’t come from God’s word, then you need to ask yourself, “Why do I believe that?”
