Who Decides What Is True? Not You or Me

Rejecting the absolute truth of God leads to stunning inconsistencies and absurdities.

Written by Jonathan L. Shirk | Wednesday, April 8, 2026

God’s thoughts are not our thoughts, and we are not the arbiters of truth. God is the arbiter of truth. Instead, we must come to God’s written Word humbly, bowing in joyful submission to its every letter. To do less is to deny God.

It is evident in our culture today that many people are ready and willing to exchange the truth for absurdity. Relativism nicely illustrates the arrogance and egocentrism of human nature. None of us gets to decide what is true. Unless our truth is the truth, our truth is a lie badly labeled. Should the bank teller honor your substantial withdrawal simply because you self-identify as Elon Musk? No. That would be absurd and unfair to Mr. Musk.

Our culture venerates science, worships it as the source of absolute truth, yet when it comes to transgenderism, culture turns a blind eye to science. It is absurd to suggest that a biological man or woman can declare themselves another gender simply because they desire the change. God has already made a wonderful genetic decision for them that they should rejoice over. A “change” would be gross ingratitude. God’s sovereign choices are always better than ours.

Additionally, our culture loves the slogan “My body, my choice” when it pertains to murdering children and perhaps sexual identity, but when it comes to things like vaccinations, some people change their tune.

All this to say, rejecting the absolute truth of God leads to stunning inconsistencies and absurdities. Isn’t it true that narcissism is the cream inside the relativism donut? Are we so self-absorbed that we actually believe truth is whatever we say it is?

Consider these three examples. One, people don’t pay good money for tickets to see a novice and delusional musician pound random notes on the piano making unpleasant sounds. Music is beautiful because of the truth of harmony, melody, rhythm, and finesse. Two, truth makes traveling on the road safe. If travelers drive according to their desires and what they wish was true, there will be carnage on the highway. Three, what can relativism do at a funeral? Wishing someone back cannot undo the harsh, absolute truth of death.

The point is that we do not get to decide what is true. The existence of absolute truth requires us to bow in humble submission. In the case of God’s infallible Scriptures, bowing in humble submission is the pathway to true joy, peace, hope, and contentment, and I’ll add salvation. There is no salvation from our sin and misery without a complete surrender to the authoritative truth of God’s Word.
