Sometimes, we hear people say they are “living the dream,” and we feel sorry for them, because their “dream” life is inferior to the better things and life that God gives. They are deceived as to what is valuable and what is worthless.
In Psalm 119:37a, the psalmist prays for something important that you and I should want and pray for as well.
We are concerned about living life wisely and purposefully, and this request is an important part of doing that.
He prayed: “Turn my eyes from looking at worthless things…”
There are two ways we can understand “worthless things” or “vanity,” as another translation says.
1) First, worthless things can be something very literal.
It could be nonsense on social media that can hypnotize a person until they have wasted a lot of time scrolling.
(Note, what is worthless to one person may be interesting or a needed bit of entertainment for someone else who needs some down time).
