Virginia optician’s dream comes true with publication of first book

Written by Debra Ferrell , Brookneal Union Star | Saturday, March 12, 2011

Kramer is a licensed optician and an active member of the Redeemer Presbyterian Church in Lynchburg. He earned a degree in Biblical Studies from Covenant College and has done work at the Liberty Seminary.

(Editor’s Note: Brookneal is a small town in Southside Virginia, about 45 minutes south southeast of Lynchburg.)

Optician Mark A. Kramer, who owns and operates Brookneal Optical on E. Rush Street, has seen a long-time dream come true with the recent publication of his first book, “A Stir in the Waters: A Layman’s Dip into the Infant Baptism Debate.”

The book takes a hard look at the custom of baptizing infants and whether or not there is actual basis for it according to Scripture.

Kramer has researched this topic off and on for the past 30 years. His daughter, Emily, inspired him to take a risk and use his talent for writing. “I never expected to write it,” he shares.

Kramer explains that his impatience with his daughter for not taking advantage of singing opportunities backfired one day when she reminded him that he did not use his own talent of writing as much as he should.

“Now I have the right to hassle her about singing,” he jokes.

His research has shown how there are many different views on infant baptism. Some of those arose from interpretations of Scripture he says doesn’t exist.

Kramer says he doesn’t believe in infant baptism even though his Presbyterian faith does practice it.
