PCA TE Kip Slawter Seriously Injured in Bike Accident

Written by Staff | Wednesday, May 26, 2010

On Tuesday, May 25, 2010, William “Kip” Slawter, pastor of Hope PCA in Ballston Spa, N.Y., suffered major trauma in a bicycle accident. At this point paralysis has left him as a quadriplegic. We urgently need prayer for him and Judy and their family.

An update from Sally Jenkins, secretary at Hope Church:

It is now 7:15 Wednesday morning. Most of you probably know that Kip had an accident on his bicycle around 6:35 on Tuesday evening and was transported to Albany Med. At that time he was awake and talking but had no feeling from his chest down.

During the night he went through surgery and is now in recovery. They removed two disks and did a bone transplant, transplanting bone fragments in the area of the disc removal to promote healing and fusion. At this point in time Kip has no use of his arms or legs and is basically a quadriplegic. He is on a ventilator due to the surgery and the goal is to get him off the ventilator in the next couple of days. If they are able to do that he may be able to be removed to rehab at the end of next week. If he is unable to be off the ventilator in the next few days they may have to insert a temporary trach and feeding tube until he can be weaned off the ventilator. The doctor felt the surgery went well but Kip needs much prayer and a miracle. The doctor estimates that his chances for full recovery are 15-20% but he is in the Lord’s hands and he can do anything.

Please uphold this precious family in your prayers. Will flies in around noon. Katie will be driving in this afternoon and Jennie (who had baby Tom by c-section last Saturday) and husband Chris hope to drive here later today if her doctor will allow it. Jim and Terry are staying at the hospital with Judy and will eventually bring her home for some sleep. We covet your prayers and know that God is still on the throne and none of this has caught him by surprise.
