Dr. Dennis Prutow, Professor of Homiletics and Pastoral Theology at the Reformed Presbyterian Theological Seminary, the retiring moderator, opened the Synod with a message from Mark 1:21-28, encouraging the delegates concerning the need to preach the good news about Jesus clearly and simply.

The Reverend Don Piper, pastor of the Reformed Presbyterian Church of Seattle, Washington was nominated Dr. Bruce Hemphill, pastor of the Covenant Fellowship RP Church in Pittsburgh, to serve as Moderator of the 178th Synod. He was elected by vote on a unanimous ballot.
