The Tragic Consequences of Having Leaders Who Don’t Know God

They’re keeping the people from God, corrupting worship, denigrating God not glorifying him.

Written by Al Gooderham | Tuesday, February 25, 2025

The most important thing for leaders of God’s people is that they know God.  Not that they’re gifted, or charismatic, or have a dusting of celebrity stardust.  But they know God.

As Elkanah and his family head home(11), they leave young Samuel behind where he ministers before the Lord under Eli.  But it’s not long until we realise that the corruption of Israel, hasn’t just infected the priests, it began there.  This is the rotten heart of Israel from where the sin spreads.

Whereas Hannah knew and praised God saying, “There is no one holy like the LORD, there is no one besides you; there is no Rock like our God.”  Whilst she rejoices in knowing and serving the God who sees, knows, weighs, and judges (12) “Eli’s sons were scoundrels; they had no regard for the LORD.”

They were worthless, good for nothing and wicked.  And they literally did not know God.  Do you see the contrast between Hannah and them?

And it’s vital that we see where this leads: Not knowing God leads to sinful actions.  Not knowing God means they ignore his word and decide right and wrong for themselves.  What does it lead to?

In Leviticus 7 God provided part of the fellowship offering for the priests but Eli and sons aren’t satisfied with that, they want the best for themselves.
