The Simple Way to Fight Headline Fear

As the world becomes increasingly wicked and the shadows of darkness move across our land, do not lose hope

Written by Joel Littlefield | Friday, July 1, 2016

You may watch the news or read a headline that depicts the world’s evil in such a way that you begin to feel sick to your stomach. Everything good around you seems to fade. It happens to all of us. All we can do is return to what we know is true. Turn to God. He is the Father of lights. Remember that He is the one who created those burning masses of nuclear light that shine by the trillions. They declare to us that He hasn’t moved from His absolute power and sovereignty. They shine because God is their source. He relentlessly holds the universe together; and your life too.

James 1:16-17 “Do not be deceived, my beloved brothers. Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of lights with whom there is no variation or shadow due to change”

God is the source of every good and perfect gift. His gifts are complete, wholesome, and find their fullest expression in Him. They are good, not because of what we think of them, but because of what He ascribes to them.

In addition to the fact that God is good is the wonderful truth that His goodness towards us never changes; no matter what; even when the gifts He has graciously bestowed upon us seem to change too.

Consider the sun for a minute. When the clouds hide its light, has its light really ceased to shine? No. And we never doubt its existence because it’s engrained in us. The sun is always there. Despite this, there are times in our lives we act as though the sun will never rise again. We have this tendency to stop trusting what we know is true because we can’t see passed the circumstance in front of us.

There are mornings when I wake up and just feel down. It’s the kind of anxiety I can’t seem to put a finger on. I cannot define it, but it’s real.

Let’s take our eyes off of this world. Don’t change your view of who God is just because everything else is unstable. Look up and see the good gifts that have come down from the Father of lights. Life, marriage, family, children, wisdom, knowledge, craftsmanship, talent, beauty, taste, joy, laughter, excitement, hope, reason, happiness, passion, kindness, and the list goes on and on.

As the world becomes increasingly wicked and the shadows of darkness move across our land, do not lose hope. Hold fast to the Father of lights, with whom there is no variation or shadow due to change.”

Though darkness seems to hide His face,

I’ll rest on His unchanging grace.

Through every high and stormy gale,

My anchor holds within the veil.
