The Shepherd Has a Weapon

The Shepherd carries the responsibility of guarding His flock.

Written by Pastor Rich Bitterman | Friday, March 27, 2026

The Shepherd does not walk ahead impatiently while His sheep struggle to keep up. He walks close enough to support them. Christ does not merely point His people toward safety. He guards them and sustains them along the way.

Many of us quietly fear that we are more vulnerable than we can handle.

“Your rod and your staff, they comfort me.”
(Psalm 23:4)

Sheep are not strong animals. They cannot defend themselves well, and they struggle to navigate dangerous terrain on their own.

That is why the shepherd carries tools.

David speaks of the rod and the staff as sources of comfort. These were not decorative items. The rod was used to drive away predators. The staff provided support and stability as the shepherd walked among the flock.

The sheep did not carry their own protection. Their safety rested in the presence of the shepherd.

Christians sometimes carry a quiet temptation to believe everything depends on their strength. We try to hold life together through effort, planning, and constant vigilance.
