The Secret Superpowers of Lifers in Your Ministry

Lifers are more than a group to which you must minister. Lifers are a group to do ministry with.

Written by Thom Rainer | Sunday, November 30, 2014

Lifers have the ability to see a long-term view of the ministry. They are not enamored with the short term. When struggles arise, they remain calm. They have been there before. When you face difficulties, have a conversation with a lifer. They may impart a perspective that will get you through the struggle. One of the great benefits of established ministries can be lifers. Invest in these men and women. You may be able to use their secret superpowers for the good of the ministry.

There are those in our ministries who have been around for a very long time. You are not their first leader, and you probably will not be their last. And while other members came and went, they remained. They are your lifers.

If you are new to your ministry, it can be easy to dismiss this group as part of the “old guard.” You assume that they have baggage and will be the ones who slow you down from pursuing a new direction.

But don’t categorize this group just yet. They can be a vital part of the future of your ministry. Lifers are more than a group to which you must minister. Lifers are a group to do ministry with. You see, lifers hold secret superpowers that you can and should leverage. Here are five of their superpowers:

  1. Lifers are historians. Lifers can tell you all about your ministry.
  1. Lifers are committed. These men and women have weathered many storms and will continue to do so.
  1. Lifers are connected. Lifers know people who know people.
  1. Lifers are influencers. People tend to listen to lifers.
  1. Lifers have perspective. Lifers have the ability to see a long-term view of the ministry.
