The Real Cure for the Moral Ills of Our Culture

Written by Staff | Monday, August 4, 2008

Note that the wrath of God is being revealed. It is not just that there will be judgment on the last day, but that there is already a foretaste of that. How is that expressed? Is it in the form of earthquakes, disasters, or blasphemers being hit by lightning? No!

The wrath of God is seen when he leaves human beings to their own devices. When people reject God by rejecting the knowledge that they have of him through creation, conscience and revelation, their thinking becomes futile and their foolish hearts are darkened. God then “gives them over” to shameful lusts and a depraved mind. As a result we are filled with all kinds of wickedness, evil, greed, and depravity. Can you think of a more apt description of what is happening in our culture at the moment? And what a horrendous judgment—that when we say to God, “Leave us alone”—he does.

What is the solution to this? Not in just reasserting “Christian” values as though they are merely “cultural,” but rather in seeking to re-establish the knowledge of God. And how do we do that? We need to glorify God and give thanks to him as God. We can only do that when we come to him through the Lord Jesus Christ. There is no other name by which men can be saved. The cure for the moral ills of our society is not to be found in moralism, religion, or secular humanist philosophy. It can only be found in Christ. Are we believing, living and communicating him? (Thoughts on Romans 1:18-32 from The Monthly Report, Free Church of Scotland)
