The world God made is not our enemy. It is our home. The distinctions God established are not prison bars. They are load-bearing walls. They hold up the roof over our heads. Tear them down and the house does not become freer. It collapses.
There was a moment when I was deployed in Iraq, where I lost the ability to smell my own odor. I had lived in the filth of showerless sweating, in the same week old BDU’s for so long, I could not tell how nasty I had become. This is what is happening in our culture today. Our civilization has become so accustomed to its own rebellion that it has lost the ability to recognize its filthiness. It began calling darkness light and light darkness. It celebrated what should be mourned and mocked what should be honored. And in so doing, it has become so intoxicated with its own slogans that it can no longer see the cliff toward which it is marching. This is where we are living right now.
And this is important to understand, because the impulse underneath all of it is not self-autonomy, authentic personhood, and the protest against victimization. The real root underneath it all is a hatred of God and a desire to undo the distinctions He has placed upon His world. A world I might add that He alone created and has all authority to dictate how it is experienced.
With that, what makes this movement so uniquely dangerous is not simply the sins it celebrates but the categories it seeks to destroy. Every civilization contains sinners. Every age contains rebels. The difference is that most rebels merely break rules. This movement seeks to erase the rulebook. It does not merely cross boundaries. It seeks to abolish boundaries altogether. It does not merely reject God’s design. It seeks to dismantle the very concept of a design.
But this is not the way our God establishes reality. For instance, the God of Genesis creates the world by separating and dividing. Light is separated from darkness. Day is separated from night. Heaven is separated from earth. Land is separated from sea. Man is separated from beasts. Male is separated from female. Creation itself is built upon distinction.
The modern revolutionary, however, looks at those distinctions and sees them as obstacles to overcome. The categories God established are treated as hurdles to leap over rather than gifts to be received. The result is a glitter filled rebellion against the architecture of reality.
This is also why the movement will not stop until it is destroyed. It cannot ever be a peaceful side quest that a few “love is love” types travel alongside the primary path of what is good and decent and normal. Once distinctions become oppressive, every distinction eventually comes under attack. If male and female can be erased, why not mother and father? If mother and father can be erased, why not marriage itself? If marriage can be erased, why not the family? If truth can be exchanged for personal truth, why not reality itself? The revolution possesses no natural stopping point because it is fueled by the endless appetite for human autonomy.
