Who is responsible for ordering the proper worship of God’s people? The Elders of the local church are responsible for the proper ordering of the gathered worship of God’s people.
The elders of the local church have the great responsibility of ordering the worship of the church. This responsibility is a scriptural mandate because they are entrusted with the spiritual leadership and oversight of the congregation. Biblically, the elders’ role includes shepherding the people (1 Pt. 5: 1-4), guarding doctrine (Ac. 20:28), and ensuring that everything in the church is done “decently and in order” (1 Cor. 14:40).
Let’s tease this duty out a bit. Here are a few key reasons why this responsibility falls to the elders:
- Spiritual Oversight: Elders are called to oversee the spiritual growth and maturity of the local church (Col. 1:9-10). Worship is the pinnacle of the church’s life, so they must ensure that the worship is full of scripture, sound in theology, and regulated by the Bible.
- Guarding Doctrine: Worship shapes faith. Elders are tasked with preserving the integrity of what is said and sung in worship (Tit. 1:9), making sure it aligns with scripture. Therefore, they will guard the preaching and every element of the worship service.
- Unity and Order: In their spiritual oversight, elders are zealous for unity and orderliness in corporate worship. Therefore, they will work diligently to prevent confusion and ensure worship edifies the body (1 Cor. 14:26-33).
- Pastoral Responsibility: Since elders are shepherds of the flock, they will ensure worship serves the congregation’s spiritual growth and addresses their needs.
