The Messy Middle

Though we may not like the messy middle, it is necessary in order to arrive at a good result.

Written by Pete Hurst | Friday, May 8, 2026

The Apostle Paul wrote “And I am sure of this, that he who began a good work in you will bring it to completion at the day of Jesus Christ” (Philippians 1:6). He didn’t write that God had completed His work in us, but that He had begun it. You and I are living in the messy middle of the Christian life.

You’ve probably heard this phrase.

I understand it originated with Google studying our buying process, from a product’s introduction to its purchase, and the messy middle being the process in between the two.

When I used to preach each Sunday, I enjoyed studying for my sermon, outlining it and arriving at good applications, and preaching it as well.

What I didn’t like was working all my notes and thoughts into a manuscript; that was the messy middle for me.

Same with real estate; I loved finding and helping a client buy or sell a house, and I loved depositing the check for my work in the bank.
