The New York Jets released Tim Tebow this morning, putting an end to, well, not much. Tebow had a total of eight passes as a Jet. He completed six of them. He ran for a total of 102 yards. The Jets never really used him.
So what does he do now? Here are four possibilities:
- Be patient. Tebow could—and probably will—stick around the NFL. He could spend some serious time working on his mechanics (he’s already been doing this with a quarterback coach). He could look for a backup position. I see four teams where he could stick: The Chicago Bears, where the ever-brittle Jay Cutler is backed up right now by Josh McCown; the Washington Redskins, where he could be the third-stringer behind Robert Griffin III and Kirk Cousins; the Jacksonville Jaguars, who have the unimpressive Blaine Gabbert and Chad Henne at the position (this could be a smart business decision for Tebow); or the Arizona Cardinals, where a suspect offensive line will protect Carson Palmer, then Drew Stanton.
- He could go to the Canadian Football League, as some have suggested. That’s the Doug Flutie route. Flutie started his career in the NFL, went north, then came back. Flutie was, of course, much shorter than Tebow, but he had better throwing mechanics. I think Tebow is too big a celebrity now for the CFL. I could be wrong.
- He could go on a mission. Tebow has never been afraid to let the world know that he’s a Christian. He could put his fame and money to good use by spending the next year in Africa or a poor part of the U.S., doing some good. Build an orphanage. Raise money for kids. Now might be the time for that.
- Or he could start his own movement. If former University of Colorado head coach, Bill McCartney could do it, Tebow could, too. McCartney famously founded the Promise Keepers. Tebow would come without McCartney’s baggage. He could fill football stadiums the way he used to as a player.
