Faithful ministry makes much of God and little of us. It is not performative because it is not ultimately concerned with appearances. It is willing to do what is right even when the cost potentially involves losing credibility or influence, because the name most worthy of being preserved is the name of the Savior.
What does successful Christian ministry look like?
The Bible answers this question forcefully.
To begin, it tells us what success does not look like.
Clicks, views, shares, or clout on social media.
Giftedness, popularity, influence, speaking ability, commanding presence, theological prowess, or spiritual experiences.
None of these, on their own, are the marks of faithfulness.
It matters little whether someone recognizes you on the street or whether you maintain a respectable public image. A platform that performs well does not necessarily mean that God is being glorified, and visible results do not guarantee that the work is blessed. When these become our metrics, faithfulness is no longer being defined biblically.
How Scripture Redefines Success
For Paul, successful Christian ministry is measured by weakness that reveals the work of the Holy Spirit and the sufficiency of grace in the life of the believer. It is understood in light of the cross and how living a cruciform life produces endurance, thanksgiving, and contentment regardless of circumstance.
Suffering, then, is not an obstacle to ministry but one of the means God uses to reveal his glory.
