I’ll be honest with you—I’ve been duped.
As a consumer of information and a student of arguments, a few well-placed phrases have carried me further than the evidence ever warranted, and I didn’t see it happening until I was already somewhere I hadn’t intended to go. That’s the design.
But there was always a signal. Whenever someone felt the need to announce, “I’m just asking questions,” something in me went uneasy—a low, quiet alarm I couldn’t quite place. No genuine truth-seeker has to make that claim. The asking is self-evident. So why say it?
The longer I sat with that unease, the clearer it became. Something was being smuggled in. A Judo move, a shifting of weights and balances, a sleight of hand dressed up as intellectual humility. So I went to examine it—why the unease, what the mechanism was, what it was doing to the people on the receiving end. My goal was to figure it out and tell a few of my closest friends.
And here we are.
How the Move Actually Works
Picture someone you trust—smart, skeptical of the mainstream, willing to say what others won’t.
They sit down across from you and say: I’m not saying anything, I’m just asking—why would the government need to hide that information? Why would the media refuse to cover this? Who benefits from you not knowing? The questions come fast, stacked, each one building on the last like a prosecutor’s opening statement wrapped in the costume of curiosity.
Notice what just happened. They made three accusations—of government deception, media suppression, deliberate harm to you—without making a single claim they can be held to. Push back and they say: I didn’t say that, I’m just asking. Agree, and they’ve moved you three steps down the road without leaving a single fingerprint.
This is not inquiry. This is a verdict in search of a trial.
Here is the tell: genuine questions are answerable. A person who actually wants to know something can be satisfied—given the right evidence, the right explanation, they land somewhere and stay. But the practitioner of this technique is never satisfied. The technique persists because it solves a real problem—the problem of wanting to influence without being accountable. Name that for what it is. Not a media industry problem. A human heart problem. Which means before you finish this article, it’s worth asking whether you’ve used it yourself—at the kitchen table, in a text message, in a meeting where you needed cover. The podcasters just have a larger audience.
