Some Thoughts on Tullian, the SGM Scandal of Child Sex Abuse, and Our Critics

Considering the motivations behind some of the recent debates

Written by Matt B. Redmond | Saturday, May 31, 2014

“I have been blogging about child sex abuse scandal within SGM for about three years. Since that time, I and many others have waited for a notable evangelical leader who swims in the same waters as Mahaney to be a Nathan among the Davids. So you will excuse us if we are not very moved by the furrowed brows and smug frowns of Tullian’s detractors.”

1) It needs to be constantly pointed out that Tullian Tchividjian is being accused of not having a proper view of the law of God. And yet not one of his detractors ever said a dadgum thing about the scandal of how evangelical leaders were rallying around Mahaney and dismissing the pleas of victims and their advocates. Tullian has shown far more regard for the commands of God in this than any of his detractors.

2) No one who knows anything about The Gospel Coalition believes that Tullian was asked to remove his blog from their site over the stridency of the present debate. The debate of origins has been far more strident than this. While they have never pointed out the other person’s views that I can find, Keller and Mohler absolutely disagree on the issue. Keller showed his support for theistic evolution with an article for Biologos. Mohler thinks such a view and the agenda of Biologos undermines the authority of Scripture and the very foundations of Christian faith.

3) Also, no one believes that Mahaney knew nothing about Nate Morales and his sexual abuse of children. Especially if you’ve ever pastored in a church with multiple pastors on staff. The idea that other pastors knew – one of those pastors was his brother in law – and it was never once discussed with the lead pastor is preposterous. If someone tells you they believe that Mahaney knew nothing, they are lying to you or to themselves, possibly both.
