Short Takes from the Associated Press Wire

Written by Don K. Clements | Sunday, March 14, 2010

Topics: One Missionary Remains in Jail in Haiti; Top Home School Texts dismiss Evolution; Hundreds Flee Religious Violence in Nigeria; Catholic Church Slams Mexican Mayor; Police Make 3rd Arrest in California Church Shooting; Oregon Faith Healer Jailed in Son’s Death

Saying that The Aqulia Report is operated on a bootstrap is the understatement of the century. That affects our ability to report some of the stories we would like to report in much more depth – especially those that come off the Associated Press wire. At those prices, it is no wonder small newspapers are going out of business in large numbers.

So, periodically (perhaps once a week if there are enough stories) we will include an article with this title and format, giving you a brief description of the topic of the article and a link to a web source where you can read the larger story, which is most cases is not very large anyway.

American Freed From Haitian Jail; One Missionary Remains
One of two Americans still being held on kidnapping charges in Haiti was released Monday, but the leader of the group remained in custody.

Top home-school texts dismiss Darwin, evolution
Home-school mom Susan Mule wishes she hadn’t taken a friend’s advice and tried a textbook from a popular Christian publisher for her 10-year-old’s biology lessons. Mule’s precocious daughter Elizabeth excels at science and has been studying tarantulas since she was 5. But she watched Elizabeth’s excitement turn to confusion when they reached the evolution section of the book from Apologia Educational Ministries, which disputed Charles Darwin’s theory. “I thought she was going to have a coronary,”

Hundreds flee new religious violence in Nigeria
A Red Cross spokesman says hundreds have fled from the central Nigerian city of Jos after a spate of new religious violence in nearby villages. Red Cross spokesman Robin Waubo says the military moved into three villages to the south of Jos on Sunday afternoon.

Catholic Church slams Mexico City’s leftist mayor
Mexico’s Roman Catholic Church has published its harshest criticism to date of leftist Mexico City Mayor Marcelo Ebrard, accusing his administration of botching issues ranging from crime to public transit. The church has often disagreed with Ebrard’s Democratic Revolution Party and accused Ebrard of “following the line set down by foreign groups” in approving legalized abortion and same-sex marriages.

Oregon faith healers get 16 months for son’s death
The judge who sentenced an Oregon couple to prison Monday for the death of their son says members of their church must quit relying on faith healing when their children’s lives are at stake. The fact is, too many children have died unnecessarily — a graveyard full,” Judge Steven Maurer said. “This has to stop.”

Police make 3rd arrest in Calif. church shooting
Police say they’ve made another arrest in a shooting at a Northern California church that injured two teenage brothers. Richmond police Sgt. Bisa French said Tuesday officers arrested 18-year-old Marcel Buggs on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon, possession of a firearm and other charges.
