She Kept Saying, “Quality of Life”

Best quality of life is radically different for the Christian and the non-Christian—God is in one and not the other.

Written by Pete Hurst | Thursday, July 2, 2026

For you and me as Christians, the best quality of life will have as its foundation our faith in Jesus Christ as our substitute, dying for our sins on the cross, and Him as our righteousness, our only way of acceptance before God.

Recently, my wife and I were on an international flight. Sitting in the economy section, we paid for extra leg room, which meant, as the seats were configured, I found myself close to two other people I didn’t know, but who were carrying on a conversation.

The young lady shared with a middle aged gentleman her humble beginnings, growing up in poverty, and thankful for her current employment.

She was in a relationship with a young man, and they were busy planning their lives, so that they would experience the “best quality of life.”

That phrase stuck out to me, because I hear it often used in reference to euthanasia; but it’s legitimately used by those wanting a good life with health, financial success, job satisfaction, fun things to do, etc.

She probably used the phrase five times or more in their ten-minute conversation. With her, It seemed like a life goal: “I’m striving for the best quality of life.”

In one sense, there is nothing wrong with this. No one, I hope, wants to work for the most miserable life.
