When they do things without grumbling. Grumbling shows that there is a lack of trust in plans or provisions. A lack of grumbling is a display of trust. When they submit to discipline. While no child likes discipline, submission to discipline shows that they trust that their parents don’t intend their harm, and they also trust their judgement about the reason for the discipline.
As a father of six, the command, “Honor your father and mother,” gets tested routinely in my house. This honoring of parents is a command with a promise, and we want to see our children blessed. I wanted to give a list of ways that I have noticed that children can honor their parents. Read until the end for one final application.
When they obey quickly. The quick obedience means that they believe what the parent is asking is good and important.
When they ask to wrestle or play together. This means that they enjoy the company of their parent and actually like them.
When they listen to instructions. Their attentiveness to instruction helps parents know that they value the words that are spoken and they want to get it right.
