“I will receive you and be a father to you, and you will be my sons and daughters.” There is also the unspoken warning.. “I will reject you, I will not be your father, and you will not be treated as my children.” There is an echo of this sentiment and a connection to the same kind of admonition, directly linked to New Testament promises for believers.
One time, this is explicitly stated in this manner in the New Testament.
The injunction, demand, and qualification should cause every believer to have a sobering conversation with themselves.
“saith the Lord Almighty.” 2 Corinthians 6:18
What is this declaration invoking this direct commandment, prefaced with this divine unction?
“ Be ye not unequally yoked together with unbelievers: for what fellowship hath righteousness with unrighteousness? and what communion hath light with darkness?
And what concord hath Christ with Belial? or what part hath he that believeth with an infidel?
And what agreement hath the temple of God with idols? for ye are the temple of the living God; as God hath said, I will dwell in them, and walk in them; and I will be their God, and they shall be my people.
Wherefore come out from among them, and be ye separate, saith the Lord, and touch not the unclean thing; and I will receive you.
And will be a Father unto you, and ye shall be my sons and daughters,
saith the Lord Almighty.” 2 Corinthians 6:14-18
What should be the conclusion to such a promise following a direct admonition from the LORD Almighty?
This is not a pastoral guideline with some fundamental wisdom for graceful living, but rather a direct command from the “LORD ALMIGHTY” to the New Testament believer.
