Retired Coach Bobby Bowden puts life and faith in perspective for his fans during book tour

Written by Jason Strombert, Sun-Sentinel | Saturday, October 16, 2010

“In all the books I’ve been involved in, I’ve always tried to give something to the boys and girls about direction in faith and football.”

Prior to being the master of ceremonies at the Rally for Rocketown, Oct. 8 at the Coral Ridge Presbyterian Church, Danny Kanell was quick to point out that he hasn’t yet read Bobby Bowden’s latest book titled “Called To Coach: Reflections On Life, Faith and Football.”

“It’s the first on the list to read,” said Kanell, who played quarterback for Bowden at Florida State University from 1992-95.

What gives Kanell motivation to read the book is the same reason he signed up to play for the legendary former Seminoles coach.

“When you meet famous people, there are some expectations of what they’re going to be like,” said Kanell, a resident of Lauderdale-by-the-Sea. “But with Coach Bowden, he truly exceeds those expectations. He leaves that lasting impression.”

Tom Sewell would know. The Davie resident has been a fan of the Seminoles and Coach Bowden’s football teams even prior to his daughter, Tonya, graduating from Tallahassee with a business degree in 1994.

“I’ve been a long-time fan of his philosophy,” Sewell said. “I haven’t read the book yet, but I’ve always followed him in the papers and watched the games on TV. He always had the right attitude.”
