Rest from Our Burdens on the Day of New Creation

Leave behind what is past, and look with hope to the joy set before you.

Written by Joel M. Ellis | Sunday, May 17, 2026

Too often we feel overwhelmed because our minds and lives are full of this world and largely empty of the word and wonder of God. Social media distracts us, a constant stream of news and information dominates our attention, and constant availability to neverending notifications and communication spoils for us the stillness we might otherwise enjoy. What our souls need is rest: rest in Christ, rest from worry, rest from distraction, rest to contemplate and enjoy the goodness and greatness of God.

Do you ever feel overwhelmed? It is a common experience in the modern world. Our lives are full of activity, noise, obligations, and opportunities. We feel isolated by grief, burdened beyond our strength by various trials we think no one can understand. Some wake up every Monday morning feeling as though they are already two days behind. We rush from one appointment to another, wondering when we will have the time to do the important work we planned to do all along. Others sit at home, feeling somewhat trapped by the walls of the house, caring for young children every hour of the day and night, being swallowed up by an ever-growing tidal wave of diapers, laundry, meals to prepare, and runny noses to wipe. Some endure long, quiet hours alone as their bodies age and decline. Sometimes we feel overwhelmed by busy-ness, sometimes by the seeming empty-ness of our lives.
