Spokeswoman Mindy Hughes said Regent’s Board of Trustees will “consider the matter” of Campo’s successor soon. Campo came to Regent from the College of Southern Nevada, where he was interim vice president of academic affairs. He previously served as the college’s dean of arts and letters and director of academic partnerships.

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. — Regent University President Carlos Campo, who succeeded Pat Robertson at the university the religious broadcaster founded, is leaving the private Christian university immediately, a spokeswoman said Saturday.

Campo’s departure was announced late Friday by Daniel Sellers, chairman of the school’s board of trustees.

Spokeswoman Mindy Hughes said in an email to The Associated Press it was Campo’s decision to leave.

Campo came to Regent in 2008 as chief academic officer. He was starting his fourth year as president.

“We are very appreciative of Carlos’ work these past five years and in particular, his role in developing new partnerships and friendships at the local, national and global level,” Sellers said in a statement.

Hughes said Robertson shared Sellers’ sentiments.
