Reformed Church in U.S. moves seminary to Sioux Falls, SD

Written by Megan Luther, Argus Leader | Saturday, August 28, 2010

“There are a lot of schools out there, but not many of them are teaching the truth and how it should be taught,” the Rev. Ron Morris told the congregation.

A Vermillion seminary has moved to Sioux Falls in hopes of attracting more students.

Classes start the second week of September at Heidelberg Theological Seminary at Trinity Reformed Church on South Louise Avenue. Two students have enrolled for this fall.

The seminary, which has been in Vermillion eight years, focuses on training men to serve the Reformed Church of the United States, a small denomination.

Moving to Sioux Falls gives the seminary the support of a larger congregation and provides access to more jobs and housing for students, said professor Maynard Koerner, the school’s only full-time staff person.

On Sunday, Trinity Reformed dedicated a $520,000 building addition that will house the seminary and Sunday school programs.

“There are a lot of schools out there, but not many of them are teaching the truth and how it should be taught,” the Rev. Ron Morris told the congregation.

Prospective student John Wedgeworth and his wife, Jodee, traveled from Des Moines to attend the dedication. He has held various jobs through the
years but he can’t see himself do anything other than being a pastor.

“It’s either that or a bum,” he said.

The Heidelberg Seminary was recommended to him by his mentor who also is an alum.
