Random Thoughts on the Imago Dei

It’s imperative to show everyone we can respect the image of God in them as people yet disagree with how they choose to live or their beliefs.

Written by Blake Long | Sunday, April 26, 2026

Christians must be willing to fight back against a culture that continues to attack the image of God from various angles. We must plant our feet firmly in God’s

To be made in God’s image means not only that we were created by God, but that we are “like” him in many ways—his communicable attributes—and therefore have inherent worth, value, and dignity.

The doctrine of the imago Dei is vital as we think about how we treat others with whom we disagree. As Christian, we don’t have the liberty to treat others poorly just because they think, believe, or act differently than us.

Though everything was created by God, the imago Dei confirms humans as the pinnacle of God’s creation and that we have dominion over everything else. Therefore, humans are more important than animals. We shouldn’t give animals—like our pets, specifically—more value than another human being.

Humanity is sacred because of the imago Dei. We have more value and worth than the cockroach because it wasn’t created after God’s likeness—we were (Gen. 1:26).

Christians care deeply (or should!) about the unborn because of the imago Dei. Abortion is an absolute atrocity and genocide because it’s the murder of humans in the womb. All people—from the unborn child to the elderly—are made in the image of God from the moment of conception.
