Raleigh, NC area PCA church plant expands space, ministry

Written by Patrick O’Neill | Sunday, July 18, 2010

After more than four years of wandering in the Garner wilderness, the flock at Sovereign King Church finally has a place to call home.

The small faith community, founded in 2006 by the Rev. Gordon Duncan and his wife, Amy, began meeting last Sunday in renovated space in a shopping center in the Raleigh suburb of Garner, NC. The 4,600-square-foot space in Garner Plaza was previously occupied a gym that recently closed.

The new spot, which comes with a three-year lease, is the congregation’s fifth location since beginning in a dance studio, and included one Duncan referred to as a former “speakeasy”. With about 80 attending Sunday services, Duncan said the previous space was “maxed out” on Sundays.

Duncan, a native of Smithfield, moved to Garner from Raleigh in 2005 for a “scratch plant,” to start a church from scratch. Duncan had previously served as an associate minister at Raleigh’s Redeemer Presbyterian Church. Sovereign King and Duncan are affiliated with the Presbyterian Church in America, a reformed, conservative branch of the Presbyterian church.

“We were having many new visitors; and what you find is if you’re in a very tight space, people are uncomfortable to visit because they’re trying to find a place to sit,” Askew said. “It will be very nice to expand and allow new visitors to feel more comfortable coming in.”
