You’ll almost always hear an exegesis of the books of the Bible. And if you knew what the word “exegesis” means you’re probably already Presbyterian.
I had always looked at reformed Presbyterians as being kind of dorky. That’s because the denomination I attended years ago in California was extremely conservative on par with some Mennonite sects. They told me women should go to college only because it helps them raise educated children but that they should never work outside the home.
Later I realized that everybody on the West Coast takes everything to the extreme, especially religion. And given that this was my first experience with reformed Presbyterians it colored my perception about the denomination.
So when I went to the Associate Reformed Presbyterian Church (ARPC) last Sunday, I expected to face a very staid ambience and see men and women wearing deliberately plain clothing with high waist lines.
But it was nothing like the church I’d visited in California. Every congregation is unique, but this seemed very different.
When I walked in the mood was festive. Many people came up to me to welcome me and inquire about me. Believe me, that doesn’t always happen. Most congregants don’t go beyond the customary salutations with visitors.
Most surprising to me was the attire. A couple of girls had nose rings. An older man had a tattoo. We all know these are superficial things, but frankly, many reformed congregations shun those who are different. I’ve seen it happen.
