Paul Clowney, Son of the late OPC/PCA leader Ed Clowney, Dies of Cancer

Written by Staff | Friday, April 13, 2012

On April 6, 2012, Paul Clowney, 65, son of the late Dr. and Mrs. Edmund P. Clowney, passed into the presence of his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, after a two-year battle with cancer.

He is survived by his wife Tessa and his children, Ben (w. Ari), Hannah (h. Roland) and Tom, as well as siblings David W. Clowney, Deborah M. Clowney, Rebecca S. Jones and Anne C. Foreman.

Born in Philadelphia, PA, Paul graduated from Philadelphia Montgomery Christian Academy and Gordon College (Massachusetts), and then served as a US Army photographer for three years in Vietnam.

He received design training at the Philadelphia College of Art and a Drs. (MPhil) in Art History at the Vrije Universiteit, Amsterdam, where he lived for five years. It was there that he met Tessa Morris. In 1976 they moved to London, where they remained until moving to Edinburgh in 2009.

His work – as a photographer, painter, illustrator, sculptor, designer and computer animator – always conveyed his love of ideas, and often communicated profound concepts. He spent twenty years as a graphic designer, culminating in the production of a forty part computer animated educational series for Channel 4, now in use worldwide.

Extremely energetic, Paul yearned to discover more about God’s world and his infectious enthusiasm inspired young and old. An avid reader, and a creative writer, he published several books and articles. Outside of creating and enjoying art, he was happiest rock climbing or playing guitar. He had an incredible ability to absorb information and often expressed himself with an eccentric sense of humor.

Paul was a thoughtful, determined Christian, serving as an elder at the International Presbyterian Church, Ealing, for many years. He was always ready to help others, often going far beyond what was asked or expected of him. Though aware of his weaknesses, he rejoiced in the grace and forgiveness given by Jesus Christ and went through his final illness with courage, faith and hope.

A funeral service will be held at St Catherine’s Argyle, Edinburgh on Tuesday, April 17, at 12:30 p.m. A memorial service will be held in London in June or July. Anyone who wishes to read or write tributes to or memories of Paul can do so at www.paulclowney.com
