On Somewhat Christian Conservatives

They rarely know much about real Christian thought and should not be taken as authorities.

Written by Christopher Neiswonger | Friday, November 7, 2025

Our interest is faith in the Lord Jesus Christ, conforming our lives to His example and being His witnesses to the world. Theirs tends to be a free market, free speech and some overlapping interests in social ethics. But given the right conditions they would turn on us as viciously as they fought for us.

I think it’s important to carefully, thoughtfully remember that a lot of the ostensibly conservative guys, Musk, Tucker, Peterson, Fuentes, Rogan, Shapiro do not represent Christianity and rarely historic conservatism.

Most swerved over to the conservative end of the spectrum from progressive fatigue and an aversion to a looming statist communism.

But they rarely know much about real Christian thought and should not be taken as authorities or even reasonably well informed.

I understand them fleeing from a possible second Biden term or the terror of a Harris presidency but Christians have overlapping interests and not an overlapping purpose.

Our interest is faith in the Lord Jesus Christ, conforming our lives to his example and being his witnesses to the world. Theirs tends to be a free market, free speech and some overlapping interests in social ethics.

But given the right conditions they would turn on us as viciously as they fought for us; the only thing lacking is a sufficient cause. If we irritate them too much I think it would be easy to get them to bite.

So be careful, because allying ourselves with worldly interests is sometimes practical this side of Heaven but being the church makes us alien to the world.

If God turned and provoked their hearts to serve him, by causing them to fight for us, that’s just the kind of thing that he would do.

But it is at best a fragile alliance.

And so we pray that they might receive the gift of faith but until then, they are simply tools in our Father’s hand and he will make them do all his holy will.

And they will think it was from their own power, wisdom, pride and for their own glory.
