Asked why the launch was set for Easter, Holland said the date, a popular time for folks to attend church, also fits with the denomination’s beliefs. “We believe the resurrection is crucial to our faith
A new church has picked a particularly significant day to launch its Culpeper mission.
Christ Covenant PCA, part of the Presbyterian Church in America, will hold its first advertised service on Easter, April 4, at 10:30 a.m. at Culpeper Christian School on Old Rixeyville Road.
Pastor Joe Holland and a growing number of congregants have been meeting there in a “soft launch” capacity since September.
Holland, 31, a University of Virginia graduate who took the job in August after serving at PCA churches for six years in Mississippi, is eager to celebrate the launch and invites the community to attend.
“We are centered on the Christ of the Bible,” he said. “We want to introduce Culpeper to classic Christianity in a way they’ll understand.”
Occupying the gym at Culpeper Christian, Christ Covenant experiences an average attendance between 40 and 60, with several young families. Until this point, most of the services have been conducted in the early evening.
Worship is casual in context but rooted in orthodox Christianity. The hymns are a mix of new and traditional. Musical assistance comes from members of the congregation — a pianist, guitarist and two vocalists.
The PCA, which practices Reformed theology, traces its founding to 1973. Now, it has 1,500 churches in the United States and 270,000 adult members. Locally, other PCA churches are in Fredericksburg, Charlottesville and Warrenton.
