When you look at the fruit of the work of your feeble, insignificant hands, you must come to the conclusion that our God is in the heavens, and He does all that He pleases. He alone deserves glory when the mustard seed and leaven begin to show its work in the hearts and minds of men.

He put another parable before them, saying, “The kingdom of heaven is like a grain of mustard seed that a man took and sowed in his field. It is the smallest of all seeds, but when it has grown it is larger than all the garden plants and becomes a tree, so that the birds of the air come and make nests in its branches.” He told them another parable. “The kingdom of heaven is like leaven that a woman took and hid in three measures of flour, till it was all leavened.”

Mustard seeds and leaven. Two things that are exceptionally different, but have one thing in common: Both are small and hidden, yet can make a big difference. And while a lot of things can be said about the kingdom of heaven, Jesus took the opportunity to describe the kingdom with these two items. To say it plainly, just a little bit of the kingdom of heaven can really change things. A small mustard seed can become a tree for the birds to nest in. Leaven, hidden in three measures (about 90 cups) of flour, can cause the whole lump to be leavened. Things with small and hidden beginnings transform the garden and completely affect the bread. And so it is with God’s kingdom.
