We were made to declare much about God. We were not made to declare health and wealth; instead, we must be like David, asking God for the meditation of our hearts and the words of our mouths to be acceptable to Him. If we only meditate on the sickness that has not been healed, if we only meditate on the things we do not have, we will be prone to hope that we can declare these things to happen “by the power of Jesus’ name.”

Declare it!

We live in a time when it has become fashionable in Christian circles to “Declare” something over our lives. The health-and-wealth gospel has slithered its way into our churches. It is craftier than most, if not all, theologies. Do we not have the power of Christ? Can we not sprinkle “In Jesus name” and all be well? Does not God want us to be happy, healthy, and more?

God made us to declare. He made all creation to declare. When we read the creation story in Genesis 1-2, we should see what David wrote in Psalm 19. The heavens are declaring the glory of God. Day by day it brings forth speech. It is screaming at how gloriously powerful and creative our God is. We as creatures were created to declare God’s glory and excellencies.

The heavens are telling of the glory of God;

And their expanse is declaring the work of His hands.

2 Day to day pours forth speech,

And night to night reveals knowledge.

3 There is no speech, nor are there words;

Their voice is not heard.

4 Their line has gone out through all the earth,

And their utterances to the end of the world.

In them He has placed a tent for the sun,

5 Which is as a bridegroom coming out of his chamber;

It rejoices as a strong man to run his course.

6 Its rising is from one end of the heavens,

And its circuit to the other end of them;

And there is nothing hidden from its heat

Psalm 19:1-6

We see in Mark 1, John the Baptist declaring as a voice in the wilderness to make ready the way of the Lord. John preached a gospel of repentance, for the coming King had arrived. As followers of Christ, we are called to declare the good news of the returning resurrected King. We also have a gospel of repentance to declare as John did. We must call people to turn away from their sin and look to Christ.
