Maryville (TN) College renews its Covenant with PCUSA Synod

Written by The Daily Times | Sunday, June 27, 2010

Maryville College, located in Maryville, Tennessee, recently renewed its voluntary covenant with the Presbyterian Church (USA)’s Synod of Living Waters.

The Rev. Terry Newland, executive of the Synod of Living Waters, joined Maryville College President Dr. Gerald W. Gibson and Maryville College Board of Directors Chairman Dr. Dorsey D. “Dan” Ellis for a signing ceremony held during a recent college Board meeting.

Reviews and renewals of the covenant occur when deemed necessary by representatives of either the College or Synod.

The last renewal occurred in 1999, according to Kathleen Farnham, the College’s director of church relations…Farnham said that it seemed fitting to renew the covenant prior to the departure of Gibson, who is retiring June 30 after 17 years at the helm of the liberal arts college.

The voluntary covenant outlines the commitments each entity makes toward a mutually beneficial relationship.

For the College’s part, 18 commitments were made in the areas of liberal arts, learning and faith; the religious nurture of students; service to community and world; and service to church…

The Synod of Living Waters made eight commitments, including assistance with the recruitment of students and the promotion of the College in the Church’s print and electronic communications.

The new Covenant also outlines the establishment of an annual Church and College Scholarship for PC(USA) students attending Maryville, and it asks the Synod to nominate a clergy member and lay person for service on the College’s Board of Directors.
