Introducing Redeemer Broadcasting– a Reformed alternative to Harold Camping and Family Radio

Written by Staff | Sunday, February 6, 2011

Redeemer is a broadcast ministry whose desire is to glorify God through means of reaching people with programming that reflects the whole counsel of God in Holy Scripture. We present the historic Christian faith as expressed in the creeds of the ancient church and in the confessions and catechisms of the Protestant Reformation

You may have heard of Harold Camping of Family Radio. He’s the misguided radio broadcaster who tells people to leave their churches, and repeatedly sets dates for the 2nd coming. He is buying billboards and sending out a “caravan” of RVs into cities with the intent of warning people of the exact date of the “rapture.”

His efforts may not yet be on the radar screen of Christian awareness for many of us, but if you are located near one of his stations in a large metro area, or near one of his billboards, or stuck in traffic behind his RV caravan, it is shocking to hear and see his cult-like claims. Some churches in the New York metro area have lost church members because of Harold Camping’s false teaching.

Family Radio for years, had carried traditional Christian music, reasonably faithful teaching and was a heritage Christian station in the NYC metro area. Gradually since 1994, the message has morphed into what is now, nearly constant cult-like teaching.

Former listeners to Family Radio have sought for an alternative. They wanted replacement programming that is more traditional in sound, while faithful to the Scriptures and that supports churches.

By God’s Providence, Redeemer Broadcasting is now providing an alternative to Family Radio programming and is available via the internet, and terrestrial FM radio.

Headquartered in upstate New York, the group was incorporated in 2004 and has been producing programs, building up a large music library, and painstakingly choosing sound teaching programs. They have expanded with four different signals in the Mid-Hudson Valley of New York State. Available in Catskill/Hudson 101.1 FM, Olivebridge 88.3 FM, Kingston/Poughkeepsie 105.3 FM, and Newburgh/Beacon 90.3 FM, the number of listeners have been increasing weekly.

The Redeemer program day includes a mix of melodious music, sound teaching, news, weather, and interviews. What makes the programming unique is that at its core, the mix is guided by Reformed theological convictions.

Board members Dan Elmendorf, Dr. John Vance, and Deb Elmendorf are members of Westminster Presbyterian Church (PCA) of Rock Tavern, NY. Additionally they rely on input from their team of 25 Advisors. Included are folks with experience in broadcasting, business, the pastorate, and education.

Each Saturday, the group airs A Plain Answer, which is similar in a way, to an NPR program (in style only), while having a strong Biblical content. Topics of discussion have included everything from John Calvin’s birthday and history, to what is the basis for godly government, the origins of Thanksgiving, to discussing Harold Camping’s heresy about the “end of the church age.” The group invites pastors and educators to participate.

Each evening on Redeemer Broadcasting, Presbyterian and Reformed pastor’s sermons are featured via the program Proclamation. The sermons come from various pastors from around the country: Mid-Hudson Valley, Long Island, Northern NJ, South Carolina, and as far away as California and Washington. High quality audio characterize these sermons, as well as excellent biblical theology. The sermons are introduced by giving a short bio of the pastor and information about his church.

Does the group have a mission statement? Yes they do, here it is:

Redeemer is a broadcast ministry whose desire is to glorify God through means of reaching people with programming that reflects the whole counsel of God in Holy Scripture.

We present the historic Christian faith as expressed in the creeds of the ancient church and in the confessions and catechisms of the Protestant Reformation. We endeavor to provide quality music, proclamation, instruction, and inspiration, as well as opportunities for interaction by listeners. We believe that God through the use of His Word renews the family, nourishes the church and restores culture.

While we are not a church or the ministry of any particular church or denomination, we seek to make use of the gifts of biblically faithful men of God who represent the various church bodies in which they serve.

Redeemer is a non-commercial educational ministry. We are supported by the gifts of individuals, groups, and organizations that benefit from and support our purpose. Our initial goal is to provide our programming throughout the United States by securing transmitting facilities in strategic areas of the nation.

We dedicate our ministry to the support of the church, the bride of Christ, as we joyfully proclaim the saving work of Jesus Christ as the only means of our eternal salvation.

Please pray for this relatively new entry into the broadcasting arena. Redeemer is looking to expand its signals into the New York City, Philadelphia, and Annapolis areas as God provides the open doors. The goal is to provide this alternative to Family Radio in the “backyard” of where Family Radio currently exists in the larger areas.

Currently, listeners outside of the Hudson Valley receive a high quality internet stream by going to the group’s website and clicking on the link “LISTEN NOW:” http://www.redeemerbroadcasting.org/

The network is currently entertaining requests for affiliate relationships by station owners, seeking to pick up the Redeemer feed and include their own local interviews, traffic, and weather. The stipulation is that the local programming must remain supportive of Reformed theology. Dan Elmendorf may be contacted directly at: [email protected] , or via the ministry’s toll-free number: 888-724-4427.
